Our Community

St Thomas More Primary School Mt Eliza

One of the many things that sets St Thomas More’s apart is our strong sense of community. Parents are not only welcome at STM, but are encouraged to be an active part of their children’s learning journey with us.  From your child’s very first day at school, you will be warmly welcomed as part of our school community and will find many and varied opportunities to be involved in the life of the school.

Through the many community events that occur each year, parents and children alike make friendships at STM that will last a lifetime. Whether it be through special school celebrations, working bees, fundraising events or social events, there are so many opportunities to get involved and become an integral part of our community.

Our aim is to have a school community that is connected and engaged and that participates and supports school and Parish life. We endeavour to have a shared vision between teachers, parents and children that is built upon mutual respect. We aim to maintain strong relationships between the school and home and believe in the importance of open communication.

Our Parish

At STM we are proud of our strong connection between our Parish and School. The school and Parish work together to develop the faith formation of our students, teachers and the community. Students have regular opportunities to attend Mass and share experiences with our fellow Parishioners.

School Advisory Council

The St Thomas More School Advisory Council (SAC) consists of the Principal, Parish Priest, a staff representative and parents from the school community. The primary role of the SAC is to support the Principal and Parish Priest by providing advice on educational matters within the context of the school’s vision and mission statements.

School parents who would like to be on the School Advisory Council, are invited to submit an expression of interest when a position on the Council becomes available.

Parents Association

The STM Parents Association consists of a group of dedicated parents who work together for the benefit of the school community. The Parent’s Association provide some important services to the school community such as:

  • Promoting a sense of community spirit within the school through the organising of parent and community functions and social events

  • Managing school fundraising opportunities

  • Providing an opportunity for parents to connect, make friends and learn more about what is going on at STM

  • Supporting new families to the school through our Buddy Family Program

  • Organising and managing school stalls including Mother’s Day and Father’s Day

  • Looking for ways to improve the family and school partnership by meeting regularly with the school Principal

Our PA meets twice a term and all are welcome to attend.

Grow Your Vision

Get Involved

Catholic school communities are built on positive relationships. There are many parents, grandparents, carers and other community members who regularly volunteer to help out in the classroom, the canteen and the uniform shop, run fundraising events and generally help the school to become a wonderful place to meet other parents, to get to know teachers and enjoy the learning environment with our children.

Within the school, parents are able to assist in many ways including:

  • School Advisory Council

  • Parents & Friends Association

  • Classroom Helper Program – Literacy, Mathematics, Excursions, etc

  • Attendance at Working Bees

  • Canteen Volunteer

  • Social and Fundraising Events

  • Attending Parent/Child Sacramental Evenings and Workshops

Families are also encouraged to support their children’s learning by attending curriculum evenings such as the Family Maths Night, Art Show and Performing Arts concerts. These evenings are an opportunity for the children to proudly showcase what they have been learning. They are very successful, well attended evenings and are enjoyed by all.

"When I wake up I’m happy because I get to go to school and Mrs Verhagen says good morning to all the children. I love the nature in the school and the kookaburras. We learn about sustainability and being kind to the world by helping nature. My teacher is kind and helps me learn to do things the right way. Sometimes we have special days like Japanese Day. I love all my friends. St Thomas More is the best school in the world!"

"STM is a beautiful school that nurtures its students and has built a warm and welcoming community. It’s focus on turning out resilient & engaged learners means that we are confident our children will be more than ready when it’s their turn to graduate."

Julia, Parent

"We love being part of a close knit school community where the focus is on learning, wellbeing and development of our children. Our boys are treated with care and respect and the school is big enough to provide opportunities while small enough to cater to their individual needs."

"From our first visit to St Thomas More, we felt such a strong sense of community. The school leadership team, teachers and families work together and each child is valued for their unique strengths. The extensive, natural grounds allow the children to develop a passion for the world around them, guided by inspiring teachers who both nurture and challenge their students to achieve their best. Choosing a school is a huge decision for any family, and I feel lucky to be part of a community that truly cares about my child’s intellectual, spiritual and emotional growth."

Heidi, Parent

"As a former School Captain at St Thomas More Primary School, I want to tell you what I loved about STM and why it had a significant impact on me.

STM not only prepared me academically but the positive school culture also helped me achieve my goals and always strive for success. STM provided me with a safe, inclusive and welcoming atmosphere throughout my journey. They have given me the independence, confidence and resilience to support myself and those around me throughout my life. I am forever thankful for my time at this amazing school."
